Islam is practiced, especially in the north-western parts of China, and a small, but growing. It gradually, it turns to a mixture of Chinese culture and Islam.
Who believe Islam in China?
Ten of the 56 recognized nation nationalities in China define themselves as Muslim: Hui, Uzbek, Uighur, Karachi, Kyrgyz, Tatar, Shi’ite Tajik, Dongxiang, Sala and Bao’an- a total of 14 million people. The Hui are the only group who enjoy the special status of a recognized minority solely because of their religion. The Hui are mostly the Han Chinese, and adhere to the teachings of Koran less than most other Muslims.
Islam came to china by which routes?
One was the famous Silk Road, the other from across the sea to the southeastern coast of China. During the Yuan dynasty(1279-1368), Islam became permanently established in China.

Many if the policies of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)were hostile to Muslims. In the 18th century, for example, the slaughtering of animals in according with Islam tites was forbidden, and the building of new mosques and pilgrimages to macca were not allowed. Marriages between Chinese and Muslims were made difficult.
Islam in China nowadays
Later, the Culture Revolution led to horrific persecution, but in the late 20th century the government attempted to bring socialism and religion closer together. In recent years, and particularly since the terrorist attacks of September 2001 and the subsequent war in Afghanistan, however, China has cracked down on defiant Uyghur’s in Xinjiang, who resent the control of Beijing.
