About Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
Yuen Po Street Bird Garden is a Chinese-style theme park. It occupies an area of about 3000 square meters and is bounded by Boundary Street, Embankment Road, Prince Edward Road West and Yuen Po Street, with its main entrance facing Boundary Street and another entrance facing Yuen Po Street. The Garden was built by the former Land Development Corporation (LDC) (now known as the Urban Renewal Authority) at a cost of $29 million. Construction of the Garden began in March 1996 and was completed in March 1997.
The origin of Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
Once upon a time, the bird vendors all had their shops on a street in Mongkok, but the government moved them into a little park near the Flower Market. It is officially known as the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden.
What can you find in Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
If you are looking for bird feed, either live (e.g. worms, grasshoppers) or otherwise, you can find them there. And there're many different styles of cages to choose from, in addition to the winged residents. If you just want to see different kinds of birds, a better place to go maybe the Hong Kong Park which has an aviary. (Left: a sample of the bird cages available.)
The activity in Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
This charming Chinese-style garden is the favored gathering place of Hong Kong's songbird owners, who carry their beloved pets around in intricately carved cages. All manner of beautiful birds can be seen here, as well as a selection of traditional bird-keeping paraphernalia. Located on Yuen Po Street in Mong Kok, the garden contains some 70 songbird stalls as well as interesting courtyards and moon gates. It's open from 7am to 8pm.
