Banpo is an archaeological site first discovered in 1953 and locats in the Yellow River Valley just east of Xi'an, China. The museum was opened in 1958.
Importance of Banpo Museum
Banpo Site is the most famous archaeological site associated with the Yangshao culture. It is the first archaeology museum in the world and was built in the base of Banpo site in 1957. Banpo was listed to be important unit of cultural relics under the national protection. It is precious cultural heritage in China and plays an important role in researching the history of primitive society of China. Since opened to public, the Banpo Museum has received 20 millions visitors from home and abroad.
Structures of Banpo Museum
The Banpo Site, covering an area of approximate 50,000 square kilometer, was divided into three parts-- residential area, pottery-making area and cemetery area.
The almost 4,500 square meters exhibit area of Banpo Museum is divided into two Exhibition Halls and a Site Hall. The two Exhibition Halls mainly display the excavated production tools and domestic tools used by the primitive Banpo people, including axes, chisels, sickles, and stone and pottery knives. In addition, the showpieces are also included the artworks and adornments. All these reflect the pictures of Banpo people's life and their folk and culture. What's more, there are a lot of colored potteries with mysterious patterns, indicating its featured colored painted pottery culture.
Banpo Society & Banpo People's Lives
Banpo people lived in Neolithic society and their tools are mainly made of stone and wood. Banpo site belongs to matriarchal community with woman as the main labor force. Women took on the responsibility of making pottery, weaving and feeding livestock while men mainly engaged in fishing. From here you can see the simple life of ancient people. At the same time you will find the tough footprints of Chinese ancestors.
