In a courtyard on No.79 Fenyang Rd.,Shanghai, there is a splendid and magnificent western-style building.Among the many European-style buildings, such a magnificent building in the architectural style of French Renaissance buildings is rarely seen.It is so exquisite and so fabulous that it looks like a "White House" seen out and away.
What is the history of little house?
At 79 Fenyang Road is the Arts and Crafts Research Institute.Built in 1905,it was originally the private residence of the director of the former French Municipal Council and formerly known as "Small White House in Shanghai".It is a construction of late French Renaissance with classic pillars and rich decorations. On the two sides of the entrance there are large steps leading to the hall on the second floor and some places inside are decorated in the style popular at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It was the No.1 office in the Asia-Pacific region of the World Health Organization after the Anti-Japanese War and in 1950s Mr.Chen Yi,the first mayor of Shanghai after the founding of People's Republic of China, once lived here.
What does the little house look like?
With the south side as the main elevation, the building, consistently designed, has a large lawn in the front and a balcony on the second story. The second story is designed with Roman long-arched windows and the third floor square windows.Clear-cut waistlines are observed in the design between the successive stories.Due to the light hoar color of the whole outer wall, the building, regardless of the absence of a dome, looks a little bit like the White House in America;hence the name "White House".
